Dom Carlos and Queen Dona Maria Amelia’s visit- 1901
John Burden Blandy gave a picnic banquet for the King and Queen, their entourage as well as local residents and members of the English community in front of the Casa Velha. The King rode up on horseback and the Queen arrived by bullock cart.

Everything had been thought about except one thing – toothpicks! John Ernest Blandy whittled a match down for the King who required one at the end of lunch.

A game of tennis was played with Dom Carlos in his waistcoat and smoking a cigar. His partner was John Ernest Blandy who related that in order to play, he (JEB) took off his leather boots and played in stockinged feet.
